Holding You Accountable
Walking into Orangetheory Fitness, you’ll immediately notice the warm yet stimulating orange glow, taking the name “Orangetheory” literally. What you’ll also notice is that you’ll receive a heart-rate monitor to wear just below your sternum. Not only does this help keep an accurate track of your vitals like your heart rate and calories burned, but it also automatically broadcasts them on a television for the entire class to see.
So, not only do you have the personal motivation to put up those hard-earned numbers, but the exercise experience is also “gamified” in the sense that you’re almost competing with others around you. It’s important to keep in mind that, while your vitals are pitted against fellow Orangetheory participants, the environment is friendly and encouraging, lifting up one another to achieve their best results.
A typical Orangetheory workout session is comprised of three components: treadmill interval training, rowing, and weight training. Group sizes can vary, but groups of about 10 people are fairly standard. During the 60-minute workout period, each participant cycles through each station about three times. Each workout session at Orangetheory is designed around the concept of “EPS”, or endurance, power, and strength. In every workout, all three of these areas of fitness are addressed and emphasized, serving as much more of a “comprehensive” workout compared to going to the local gym on your own time. While it’s entirely possible to get in just as good of a workout on your own, Orangetheory makes it easy for fitness novices or those getting back into shape to exercise “correctly”, safely and effectively, taking guessing out of the workout equation. Doesn’t that sound nice?
Why Runners Love Orangetheory
Again, Orangetheory is beneficial for people of all fitness backgrounds, but runners seem to have a propensity for this one-hour-of-power workout session. Why? Well, as Fort Collins Fitness Festival has touched on in our previous blog post, Orangetheory’s approach to efficient exercise is designed to push you into the “Orange Zone”. This translates to working out at 84 percent or higher of your maximum heart rate for about 12 to 20 minutes of the hour-long workout session.
This sweet spot takes some work and discipline to reach, but it allows you to torch calories and increase your metabolism rate for 24-36 hours after you’re finished working out. Honestly, who doesn’t want to continue burning calories when you’re on the couch with a pint of Ben & Jerry’s binge watching Friends? The extended calorie burn brought on by HIIT (high-intensity interval training) might sound too good to be true, but it really works.
